The welfare dimensions of saiga mass mortality events are difficult to overstate in scale. Animals dying from hemorrhagic septicemia experience respiratory distress, hemorrhage, and rapid physiological collapse. The death of over 200,000 animals in three weeks represents welfare harm at a scale exceeded by few other events. Surviving animals — including calves that lose mothers and mothers that lose calves — experience social disruption and the stress of navigating altered population structures. Conservation interventions that reduce poaching pressure and habitat fragmentation help individual saiga avoid stress and death through human causes. However, the climate-driven disease threat is currently beyond conservation intervention capacity — only addressing climate change can reduce the frequency of trigger weather events.
