Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for salmon offer better environmental control than sea cage farming but introduce new welfare challenges from water quality fluctuations, high density, and artificial conditions.
RAS farming removes some welfare problems of sea cage farming (sea lice, environmental variation, escape) while creating different welfare challenges. High stocking densities in enclosed tanks create crowding stress; limited space prevents natural behavioral expression; artificial lighting regimes require careful calibration. Water quality failures in RAS systems can cause acute welfare crises rapidly because affected fish cannot escape poor conditions as they can in more dispersed sea cage environments. The environmental control that RAS enables is genuinely beneficial for welfare when properly managed — consistent temperature, good oxygen levels, and disease prevention represent welfare improvements. But the same control becomes a welfare liability when economic pressure drives excessive stocking density or inadequate water quality management.
