Uncontrolled epilepsy causes recurrent episodes of involuntary, uncoordinated neural activity — the seizure itself involves loss of consciousness, convulsions, and post-seizure confusion (postictal phase) that can last hours. Frequent seizures are associated with progressive brain changes in some dogs. Between seizures, well-controlled epileptic dogs may have completely normal quality of life. The welfare challenge is achieving adequate seizure control while managing medication side effects. Excessive phenobarbital causing sedation or hepatotoxicity reduces quality of life through a different mechanism. Optimal epilepsy management balances seizure control against medication burden.
