Lower urinary tract disease is extremely common in cats, with feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) being the most common cause in young-middle aged cats and strongly associated with psychosocial stress.
FIC causes acute bladder pain similar to severe cystitis in humans — frequent painful urination attempts, distress vocalizations, and complete disruption of normal behavior during episodes. The strong association with psychosocial stress means that the root cause of many FIC episodes is inadequate environmental management rather than primary urinary pathology. Cats in overstressed environments may have recurrent episodes unless the underlying stressors are addressed. Urethral obstruction in male cats is a medical emergency involving complete inability to urinate with rapid deterioration — untreated obstruction causes death within 24-72 hours. Welfare management for urinary cats requires attention to both immediate symptom relief and long-term stress reduction through environmental improvement.
