Invertebrate sentience research is advancing rapidly, with honeybees demonstrating pessimistic cognitive biases after stressful experiences and fruit flies showing sleep, appetite, and learning impairments consistent with negative affective states.
If insects have subjective experiences, the scale of their suffering in agriculture and pest control contexts is almost incomprehensibly large. Billions of bees are used in commercial pollination under conditions that cause significant mortality and potential distress. Pest control insecticides cause massive insect mortality. Even if the probability of sentience is low, the number of insects affected means that expected welfare impacts could be substantial. This area of welfare science requires more research and policy engagement.
