Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) allow precise control of water quality and biosecurity but present unique welfare challenges and opportunities compared to conventional net-pen salmon farming.
RAS represents a significant technological advance for aquaculture biosecurity and environmental impact, but welfare outcomes depend critically on management quality. Well-designed RAS with appropriate stocking densities, water quality monitoring, and reduced handling stress can provide measurably better welfare than net-pen systems. Poorly managed RAS may combine the disadvantages of both systems. The controlled environment of RAS also enables welfare monitoring technologies like automated behavioral tracking that are impractical in open-water net pens.
