Nose rings create a welfare paradox in outdoor pig farming: they are used precisely because outdoor access allows natural behavior, but then prevent the most fundamental natural rooting behavior. Pigs with nose rings that attempt to root experience pain, which progressively inhibits the behavior through aversion. The welfare improvement of outdoor access is substantially reduced by nose ringing. Management alternatives that allow some rooting while protecting pasture quality — rotational systems, appropriate enrichment materials — represent genuine welfare improvements.
