Animal welfare has improved measurably over the past 50 years across multiple dimensions — legislative protection, scientific understanding, and social norms. Battery cages, veal crates, and sow stalls have been banned in leading jurisdictions. Wild animal circus acts have been eliminated in dozens of countries. Cosmetics animal testing is banned in the EU and increasingly globally. These achievements demonstrate that determined, evidence-based advocacy can transform animal welfare at scale. The remaining challenges — factory farming of billions of animals, wild animal suffering, and the welfare implications of emerging technologies — are large but addressable with the tools and strategies that have already proven effective.
