Animals in well-designed handling facilities guided by low-stress techniques load and unload with minimal acute stress and essentially no injury. Animals in poorly designed facilities managed by inexperienced handlers suffer significant acute welfare harm from electric goads, rough physical handling, and falls on inappropriate surfaces. The economic case for investing in low-stress handling is strong — reduced bruising, lower injury rates, and better meat quality — providing aligned incentives with the welfare case.
