Stocking density is the most commercially contentious welfare parameter in aquaculture because higher density means more fish per cubic metre and more revenue per unit of infrastructure cost. The welfare evidence consistently shows that lower densities produce better welfare outcomes — less aggression, lower cortisol, better immune function, reduced disease. The economic case for density reduction is weaker than the welfare case in conventional systems, but the correlation between density and disease incidence means that high-density systems often incur treatment costs that partially offset revenue benefits. Welfare-certified lower-density production commands price premiums that further improve the economics.
