Rooting is the defining behavioral need of pigs, consuming up to 75% of their active time in natural settings, yet is almost entirely denied in conventional housing.
Rooting frustration is perhaps the most fundamental welfare problem in intensive pig production. Pigs are built for rooting — it is as natural and necessary to them as walking. Denying them any manipulable substrate does not eliminate the motivation; it creates an animal in a constant state of unfulfilled behavioral drive. Providing even simple rooting materials like straw or compost dramatically reduces stereotypic behaviors and improves welfare indicators. The cost is modest relative to the welfare benefit.
