Laboratory mice are the most common research animals. Evidence on their social needs, enrichment requirements, and housing conditions is advancing rapidly, improving welfare without compromising research.
Laboratory mouse welfare has improved significantly through application of behavioral science to housing design. Social housing for compatible females, nesting material provision, and tunnel handling are evidence-based improvements that reduce chronic and acute stress. The scientific case for welfare improvement is compelling: less-stressed mice have more robust immune systems, more consistent behavioral responses, and lower intra-group variability — all of which improve experimental quality. The historical assumption that welfare improvements compromise research validity has been reversed; welfare and scientific quality are aligned in most contexts.
