Commercial turkeys are among the most welfare-compromised farmed animals due to selective breeding for extreme growth — yet meaningful reforms are now advancing in parts of the industry.
Turkeys represent one of the starkest examples of how agricultural selective breeding can create animals trapped in bodies that cause them ongoing suffering. The extreme breast muscle development that makes commercial turkeys profitable comes at the cost of chronic musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular strain, and the inability to perform natural behaviors. Reform is possible: slower-growing genetics, better housing with natural light and foraging materials, and higher space allowances all demonstrably improve welfare outcomes. Consumer demand for heritage and outdoor-raised turkeys is creating market incentives for these improvements, but the vast majority of turkeys are still raised under conditions that cause preventable suffering.
