Thousands of companies have committed to 100% cage-free eggs — a meaningful welfare improvement over battery cages that nonetheless leaves significant welfare challenges unaddressed.
The cage-free transition represents a genuine and meaningful welfare improvement for laying hens — the ability to walk, spread wings, and engage in social behavior matters. But advocates and welfare scientists consistently note that cage-free is a floor, not a ceiling. Hens in cage-free systems still face significant welfare challenges: keel bone fractures affect the majority of hens in many cage-free systems, feather pecking remains prevalent, and air quality in large flocks can be poor. The progress from battery to cage-free is real but should be understood as a step toward adequate welfare rather than its achievement. Consumer and corporate pressure should continue toward higher standards including genuine outdoor access, enrichment, and lower stocking densities.
