A growing body of research reveals cognitive abilities in fish that challenge traditional assumptions — with significant implications for how billions of fish are treated.
Fish cognition research is transforming our understanding of what it means to be a fish. Far from simple reflex machines, fish demonstrate learning, memory, social intelligence, and in some species apparent self-recognition. This does not mean all fish are cognitively equivalent, or that all aspects of fish experience are equivalent to mammals — but it does mean that the assumption of fish as welfare-irrelevant is scientifically untenable. The welfare implications are significant: animals that can learn, remember, form social bonds, and potentially recognize themselves are animals whose experiences matter morally. Fishing practices, aquaculture conditions, and handling methods that cause distress in such cognitively capable animals deserve serious welfare scrutiny.
