Snakes are the most commonly kept reptile in the UK and US, yet their welfare needs are frequently misunderstood and inadequately met by their owners.
Snake welfare is systematically underappreciated in the reptile keeping community, partly because snakes are stoic animals that do not vocalize distress and whose behavioral signs of poor welfare require knowledge to recognize. The consequences of this knowledge gap are significant: snakes living in inadequately sized enclosures cannot express natural locomotion; those without appropriate thermal gradients cannot thermoregulate; and those without secure hides exist in a state of chronic exposure anxiety. The reptile keeping hobby has evolved substantially in recent decades, with better understanding of welfare requirements — but old inadequate practices persist in some communities. Choosing captive-bred animals, providing appropriate enclosures, and understanding species-specific needs are the foundations of responsible snake keeping.
