Outdoor pig production provides significant welfare advantages over indoor systems but also presents specific challenges that good management must address.
Outdoor pig production represents one of the most significant welfare improvements available within commercial pork production — the opportunity to root, explore, wallow, and express the full range of natural pig behavior produces animals that are behaviorally healthier and physiologically less stressed than their indoor counterparts. But outdoor systems are not welfare-perfect: they require careful management to prevent heat stress, parasitic disease, and the welfare harms of soil poaching and inadequate shelter. Good outdoor pig welfare requires genuine commitment from producers — pasture rotation, adequate wallow provision, appropriate shelter, and parasite management. The welfare gains from outdoor rearing are real and substantial enough to justify the additional management complexity.
