The standard housing conditions in many research facilities prevent normal behavioral expression and maintain animals in a state of persistent stress that compromises both welfare and the validity of research results. Improving conditions through social housing, enriched environments, and gentle handling methods serves both ethical and scientific goals — stressed animals are not good research models for many biological questions.
