Feral pig welfare involves the difficult ethics of invasive species management applied to an intelligent, demonstrably sentient animal. These pigs have the same cognitive complexity as their domestic counterparts — strong individual personalities, complex social bonds, good memory — and yet exist as ecological threats that justify lethal management. The welfare-conscious approach requires using the most humane effective methods available (aerial shooting when feasible, species-specific toxicants over indiscriminate rodenticides), minimizing wounded animals that die slowly, and continuing research into fertility control that would reduce reliance on lethal methods.
