The science of fish cognition has advanced rapidly, revealing learning capacities, social recognition, and behavioral complexity that demand reconsideration of fish moral status and welfare needs.
Fish cognition research has steadily eroded the assumption that fish are simple reflex machines without experiences worth moral concern. Self-recognition, individual recognition of specific humans, complex social learning, and pain avoidance that cannot be explained as mere reflex all point to cognitive complexity that implies capacity for welfare-relevant experience. This does not mean fish experience the world as mammals do — their nervous systems and evolutionary history are different — but it does mean that dismissing fish welfare as irrelevant is scientifically unjustified. The moral implications of fish cognition research for aquaculture, fishing, and fish management are profound and inadequately reflected in current practice and policy.
