Animal welfare has achieved remarkable progress over recent decades through legislation, corporate commitments, and changing attitudes — celebrating achievements while maintaining urgency for the vast work remaining.
Animal welfare advocacy has achieved genuine, measurable progress that deserves recognition alongside the urgency of continuing work. Battery cage bans in the EU, corporate cage-free commitments covering hundreds of millions of hens, the criminalization of animal cruelty across the US, improved veterinary pain management, and shifting public attitudes all represent real welfare improvements for real animals. This progress demonstrates that advocacy works — that consumer pressure, legislative campaigns, scientific research, and cultural change translate into better lives for animals. The scale of remaining challenges — 80 billion land animals in largely unregulated systems — does not diminish what has been achieved. Both things are true: significant progress has been made, and immense work remains.
