Wild boar are among Europe's most managed wild mammals, subject to hunting, culling, and habitat exclusion. Humane management methods and welfare during control operations are increasingly debated.
Wild boar management presents a genuine ethical challenge. The animals cause economic and ecological damage, but they are sentient beings capable of fear and pain. Management methods differ substantially in how much suffering they cause: night hunting with proper caliber weapons and trained hunters can be relatively humane; badly executed drives can cause severe distress and wound-but-not-kill outcomes. The welfare costs of management are often invisible in policy discussions that focus only on effectiveness. Better standards for minimizing suffering during wild population management are both possible and overdue.
