These are animals with rich inner lives, long-term memories, complex social bonds, and behavioral flexibility that can express itself either positively — through play, problem-solving, and cultural learning — or negatively, through stereotypy, self-harm, and social dysfunction. Getting primate welfare right requires continuous investment in enrichment creativity, careful social management, large and complex spaces, and ongoing behavioral monitoring.
