Traditional veal production involves male dairy calves confined in individual stalls on low-iron diets. Reform efforts have made significant progress, though welfare challenges remain in the global veal industry.
Veal reform represents genuine welfare progress: the shift from individual isolation stalls to group housing, and from iron-deficient to iron-adequate diets, represents meaningful improvements for millions of animals. But the baseline was so poor that the progress, while real, still leaves room for significant further improvement. The deeper question — what happens to male dairy calves in systems without viable veal markets — raises a welfare concern that veal reform does not address. Humanely reared rose veal from group-housed calves with appropriate social and dietary conditions is substantially better than its historical baseline.
