The last two decades have transformed our understanding of fish cognition. Research on learning, memory, social intelligence, and pain in fish has profound implications for how we treat them.
Fish cognition research has fundamentally challenged the assumption that fish are simple, unfeeling animals. They learn, remember, form social bonds, solve novel problems, and respond to painful stimuli in ways that suggest subjective experience. This matters enormously for welfare, because the scale of harm to fish in fishing and aquaculture is larger than for any other vertebrate group. If fish can suffer — and the evidence increasingly suggests many can — then the fishing of hundreds of billions of fish annually represents a welfare concern of extraordinary magnitude. Welfare science has to catch up with what cognition science is revealing.
