Enrichment for farmed pigs is legally required in the EU but the quality of provision varies enormously. Understanding which enrichment materials and designs are most effective guides better practice.

Welfare Considerations

Chains are technically compliant with EU law but do almost nothing for pig welfare — pigs investigate them briefly and return to exploring the barren pen. Straw, rooting substrate, and manipulable organic materials actually engage pigs and reduce tail biting, aggression, and stereotypy. The quality of enrichment provision matters as much as its presence. Farms that understand pig behavior and provide genuinely effective enrichment are meeting the spirit of the law; farms providing chains to check a compliance box are not.
