Tilapia are among the most widely farmed fish globally, yet welfare standards for their production lag behind those for salmon and other species in developed markets.
Tilapia welfare represents a significant blind spot in aquaculture welfare progress. The hardiness that makes tilapia economically attractive enables practices that would not be tolerated for more fragile species — extremely high stocking densities, poor water quality management, and minimal enrichment. Yet tilapia are sentient fish with demonstrated pain responses, social behaviors, and stress physiology indicating they experience suffering in these conditions. The global scale of tilapia production means welfare improvements could benefit enormous numbers of animals. Growing certification systems are beginning to incorporate tilapia, providing a mechanism for higher welfare production to gain market recognition.
