The evolution of wildlife monitoring technology has transformed the welfare costs of conservation science. Previously, research required physical capture with associated stress, injury, and sometimes death. Modern approaches including acoustic monitoring, camera trapping, eDNA analysis, and remote sensing can answer many research questions with minimal or no animal disturbance. Where capture is still necessary, miniaturized devices reduce attachment impacts. The welfare dividend of non-invasive monitoring extends beyond individual animals to population-level stress reduction in sensitive species.
