Laboratory animal refinement has generated genuine welfare improvements for tens of millions of research animals annually, though significant gaps between best practice and common practice remain. The evidence that appropriate analgesia, housing enrichment, and positive reinforcement training reduce stress and improve experimental reproducibility creates a scientific as well as welfare case for refinement. The cultural change required to ensure refinement is consistently implemented — from experimental design through to veterinary oversight — is ongoing in most research institutions. Regulatory pressure, institutional animal care programs, and researcher education have all contributed to progress, but the magnitude of remaining refinement opportunities in laboratory animal welfare remains significant.
