Measuring Horse Welfare: Science and Practice

Scientific advances in horse welfare assessment are helping owners, trainers, and veterinarians identify and address suffering more reliably than ever before.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Horse welfare assessment has matured significantly, moving from subjective owner judgment to validated, observer-independent tools. The Horse Grimace Scale, the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram, and heart rate variability monitoring collectively represent a toolkit that can identify suffering that was previously invisible to even experienced handlers. The challenge is implementation: these tools exist in the research literature but are not yet standard practice in equestrian sport, training yards, or regulatory oversight. Embedding welfare assessment in competition licensing, veterinary checks, and coaching education is the priority for translating science into practice.
