Bat welfare spans individual and population dimensions. Individual bats disturbed during hibernation expend critical energy reserves and may die from the physiological cost; those struck by wind turbines suffer traumatic injuries and barotrauma. At population scale, white-nose syndrome and habitat fragmentation threaten entire species with regional extinction. Welfare-positive bat conservation combines roost protection, white-nose syndrome research and treatment, wind turbine operational modifications during peak bat activity, and reduction of light pollution in foraging landscapes.
