Pigs have strong behavioral needs for rooting, foraging, and manipulation of organic materials — needs that barren pen environments cannot meet. The consequences of unmet enrichment needs are severe: stereotypic behaviors, redirected aggression including tail biting, and chronic psychological stress. Providing adequate enrichment — specifically manipulable organic material — reduces these harms substantially and is legally required in the EU, though compliance monitoring remains inadequate.
