Marine protected areas benefit fish welfare by reducing fishing mortality, allowing population recovery, and protecting habitat from destructive fishing practices.
Marine protected areas improve fish welfare through multiple mechanisms: reduced fishing mortality, recovery of age structure with older fish experiencing fewer stressors, habitat protection, and reduced gear entanglement risk within boundaries. From a welfare perspective, fish in well-enforced MPAs experience lower rates of hook injuries, net entanglement, and barotrauma from capture and discard. The population recovery within MPAs also reduces competition stress as fish abundance increases. MPAs represent one of the highest-leverage ocean welfare interventions available.
