Extreme selective breeding for appearance traits has created endemic health problems in many popular dog breeds — ethical breeding reform is urgently needed.
Breed-related health problems represent a welfare emergency of significant scale. Millions of popular breed dogs live with chronic pain, breathing difficulties, and mobility impairment as direct consequences of breed standards that prize appearance over function and health. Reform requires action at multiple levels: breed standards must eliminate conformations associated with chronic suffering; health testing should be mandatory before breeding; and consumer education must redirect demand toward healthier alternatives. Veterinary associations calling for moratoriums on the most affected breeds are reflecting a welfare consensus that the current situation is ethically unacceptable.
