Livestock genetic diversity is a welfare issue as much as a conservation one. The extreme production specialization of industrial breeds — rapid growth, high milk yield, maximum egg production — creates the physiological conditions for endemic welfare problems: leg disorders from growth rate, metabolic disease from milk production, and cardiac failure from muscle development. Heritage and indigenous breeds, maintained for traditional purposes without extreme selection pressure, exhibit substantially lower prevalence of these production-related welfare conditions. Breed diversity conservation preserves welfare-positive genetic material while protecting against the vulnerability of monoculture production systems.
