African pygmy hedgehogs kept as pets have complex behavioral needs often unmet in standard pet care. Proper enrichment dramatically improves their welfare and longevity.
Pet hedgehogs are frequently kept in conditions that fail to meet their core behavioral needs. A quality enclosure must include a large running wheel (at minimum 28 cm diameter with solid surface), multiple hiding spots, deep substrate for burrowing, and opportunities to forage. Diet should consist primarily of high-quality insectivore food supplemented with live insects — mealworms, crickets, and waxworms provide hunting stimulation. Handling should occur in the evening when hedgehogs are naturally active; forcing interaction during the day causes stress. Temperature stability between 22-26°C is essential. Given their short lifespans (3-6 years), consistent veterinary care from a small mammal specialist is critical.
