Nutrient cycling in aquaculture is directly connected to fish welfare through its effects on water quality. Fish living in water with elevated ammonia, nitrite, or depleted oxygen experience physiological stress, compromised immune function, and increased disease susceptibility. Systems that manage nutrients effectively — whether through biofilters in RAS, vegetation uptake in aquaponics, or complementary species in IMTA — provide better water quality and thus better welfare for the fish being raised. Integrated systems also tend to reduce antibiotic use since healthier water conditions support stronger immune responses. The welfare benefits of better water quality translate to reduced disease-related suffering, better growth, and lower mortality. However, welfare monitoring in these systems must still address stocking density, handling protocols, and other critical factors beyond water chemistry.
