Rainbow trout are the most widely farmed salmonid species globally. Their welfare needs are increasingly understood, enabling significant improvements in farming practice.
Farmed trout welfare is shaped primarily by stocking density, water quality, handling frequency, and slaughter methods. Stocking densities in commercial systems often exceed what trout behavioral ecology suggests they can comfortably tolerate — chronic crowding increases cortisol, reduces immune function, and enables disease spread. Welfare-conscious farms maintain lower densities, provide water flow that allows trout natural rheotaxis (orientation toward current), and minimize handling events. Feed management affects welfare through aggression: automated feeders that distribute food widely reduce dominant fish monopolizing resources. At slaughter, welfare is significantly affected by whether effective stunning precedes death — trout killed without stunning (CO2 bath alone, or live chilling) show prolonged brain activity indicating potential consciousness during dying. Electrical stunning renders fish insensible within milliseconds and is the welfare gold standard.
