The treatments themselves vary in welfare impact: medicinal bath treatments cause handling stress and potential toxicity; mechanical treatments like warm water bathing cause acute thermal stress; laser systems (Stingray) target lice optically and are considered the most welfare-positive mechanical option. Wrasse cleaner fish deployed in cages face their own welfare challenges — inadequate habitat, social stress, and high mortality rates in systems not designed for their needs. The optimal welfare approach integrates multiple strategies: breeding for sea lice resistance, improved site selection, coordinated area management to reduce lice pressure, and welfare-positive treatment methods when intervention is needed.
