The bivalve welfare question sits at the edge of current scientific knowledge about sentience and consciousness. Most welfare scientists conclude that oysters and mussels are unlikely to experience suffering in any morally significant sense, based on their simple distributed nervous systems lacking the neural architecture associated with consciousness in other animals. This places bivalves at the opposite end of the sentience spectrum from vertebrates, cephalopods, and decapod crustaceans. However, scallops — with more complex nervous systems and behavioral repertoires — warrant more uncertainty.
