Honey bee welfare is an emerging area at the intersection of insect sentience science and agricultural practice. The evidence that bees show functional emotions — bias toward pessimistic cognitive judgments after aversive experiences — suggests welfare considerations beyond colony-level health to individual and group experience. For managed colonies, the primary welfare considerations are: disease management (particularly Varroa), nutritional adequacy, handling stress, and whether management practices support or disrupt natural colony behaviors. The most welfare-positive beekeeping minimizes unnecessary interventions, ensures adequate honey reserves (rather than excessive harvest with sugar substitution), manages disease through effective but least-invasive means, and provides diverse forage rather than monoculture diets. The scale of honey bee use in pollination — colonies subjected to long-distance transport and single-crop diets — creates welfare challenges that are difficult to address without systemic changes in agriculture.
