Tail docking in farm animals represents a welfare intervention that causes certain harm (amputation pain) to prevent uncertain harm (tail biting in pigs, flystrike in sheep). The ethical calculation depends on whether the risk being prevented actually materializes and whether non-mutilation alternatives are available. For pigs, evidence consistently shows that enrichment-based management reduces tail biting to levels where docking is unnecessary — the EU's requirement that docking be non-routine reflects this evidence. For sheep, strategic shearing, tail-length management that removes only the tip rather than the full tail, and blowfly prevention through topical treatments reduce flystrike risk. In all cases, when docking is performed, appropriate analgesia — local anesthesia and NSAIDs — reduces but does not eliminate the welfare cost.
