Microchipping dramatically improves outcomes for lost and stray companion animals. Universal identification systems reduce suffering and save lives at scale.
Microchipping is one of the highest welfare-per-cost interventions available for companion animals because of its dramatic effect on reunification rates for lost animals. The welfare costs of a lost animal — shelter stress, uncertainty, risk of injury or death on streets — are substantial. The welfare cost of microchipping — a brief moment of discomfort during implantation — is trivial by comparison. At population level, universal microchipping reduces shelter intake, reduces euthanasia for space, and reduces the prolonged suffering of animals never reunited with their owners. The technology works only when registration databases are current and when scanning is routinely performed by shelters and veterinary practices. Education about database maintenance (updating contact details when moving, changing phone numbers) is as important as the chip itself. Expanding microchipping requirements to cats, as the UK has done, and eventually to other companion animal species, progressively extends these welfare benefits.
