The evidence that excessive crowding causes chronic stress is robust: elevated cortisol, suppressed immunity, reduced growth rates, and higher disease incidence are all documented at high stocking densities across multiple species. From a welfare perspective, maximum stocking density standards should reflect the behavioral ecology of each species — territorial species require lower densities than schooling species that naturally form dense aggregations.
