The overuse of antibiotics in livestock farming drives antimicrobial resistance, threatening both human health and animal welfare. Reducing antibiotic use requires systemic reform.
The link between animal welfare and AMR is bidirectional: poor welfare creates conditions that require antibiotic use, and overuse of antibiotics drives resistance that undermines future treatment capacity for both animals and humans. Improving livestock welfare — through lower stocking densities, better nutrition, environmental enrichment, and early disease detection — reduces the disease burden that drives antibiotic dependence. This means that animal welfare reform is simultaneously a public health intervention. The "One Health" framework, which recognises the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health, provides the conceptual basis for integrating welfare improvement with AMR reduction strategies.
