Sea lice are the most significant disease challenge in Atlantic salmon farming, and treatments for lice carry their own substantial welfare costs. Better solutions are urgently needed.

Welfare Considerations

Sea lice management in salmon farming presents a genuine welfare dilemma: untreated lice cause progressive suffering and mortality, but the treatments themselves carry significant welfare costs. Hydrogen peroxide treatments, for example, cause elevated stress hormones, respiratory distress, and can kill weakened or already compromised fish. The welfare burden of lice management is not simply the lice themselves but the cumulative impact of repeated treatment cycles over an 18-22 month production period. The industry urgently needs solutions that break this dilemma: effective lice control without harmful treatment. Cleaner fish represent a biologically elegant approach but require much better welfare standards — the welfare of wrasse and lumpfish used as cleaner fish is currently inadequate.
