Recirculating aquaculture systems and offshore cage technology offer new approaches to salmon farming that could dramatically improve both welfare and environmental outcomes.
RAS technology offers genuine welfare advantages over conventional sea pen production: elimination of sea lice (and the harmful treatments they necessitate), controlled water quality, freedom from weather extremes, and the ability to implement optimal welfare conditions year-round. These advantages come at significant cost, which means that welfare-motivated consumers willing to pay premium prices for RAS salmon are directly funding welfare improvement. The transition to RAS is not without welfare challenges: poorly managed RAS can create high-stress environments, and the technology's reliability is still being validated at scale. However, the welfare potential of RAS salmon farming, combined with its environmental advantages, makes it a genuinely promising direction for the industry's welfare future.
