Animal ambassador programmes create welfare obligations that extend beyond typical zoo exhibit animals. Frequent handling, transport to multiple venues, exposure to novel people and environments, and disrupted routines all impose welfare costs. These costs may be offset by genuine educational value — but this offset must be demonstrated rather than assumed. Species that maintain voluntary interaction and show no signs of chronic stress in validated welfare assessments may be appropriate ambassadors; those showing avoidance or stress indicators should be retired from programmes.
