The science of pig enrichment is well-developed — researchers have clearly established what works and why. The challenge is implementation at farm scale. Straw-based enrichment, which most effectively addresses pig welfare, creates manure management challenges in slatted floor systems that have led many producers to choose inadequate alternatives. Regulatory requirements without infrastructure support have limited practical impact. Meaningful progress requires combining regulatory standards with investment in farm conversion and economic support for producers making welfare-improving changes.
