Crayfish welfare occupies uncertain but not dismissible territory in welfare science. The evidence for aversive experience and avoidance learning is substantial enough to warrant attention, particularly given the enormous numbers involved in both aquaculture and invasive species management. The precautionary principle suggests applying welfare consideration to slaughter and handling practices for species where the evidence of sentience, while not conclusive, is non-trivial. The invasive species management dilemma — killing large numbers of non-native crayfish to protect ecosystems — does not eliminate welfare consideration but requires balancing against ecosystem welfare.
